Groves and Gutteridge Ltd has been established since 1899 and was one of the largest boat builders in the United Kingdom. One of the main productions of the company has been the building of lifeboats for the Royal National Lifeboat Institution. The Admiralty had built a boat which was to the same design and construction as the popular RAF Pinnaces whilst the Admiralty had around 90 of these craft, the RAF had some 260. The original design was from the builders Groves and Gutttridge of Cowes who completed the first RAF Pinnace MK1 in 1938.
