History
At the beginning of the 20th century
The Rosa was a classic fishing vessel that was built in 1921 by a Spanish boat builder from the Port Pescadores in the Canaries. For more then 40 years she was used by Danish fisherman for fishing expeditions in Newfoundland. Newfoundland, with its numerous fishing grounds was used by many Europeans for Cod fishing.
From the beginning of the 16th century, French, Spanish and Portuguese came at the beginning of the spring to fish the seas of Newfoundland and departed in autumn to return home with their salt cod. The island, including the southern Labrador, where the Basques hunted whales, was a center for European fishing. Towards the end of the 16th century there was a decline in the presence of Iberian fisherman and was taken over by fisherman from the Southwest of England. In consequence to this, the majority of fishing in Newfoundland was shared between the French and the English.
After the second World War-
The fishing vessel Rosa was transformed into a Ketch by her new English owners.
The Rosa carries a large main mast and an identical mizzen mast mounted in front of the rudder. Coming in at 33.45 meters in length and 6.66 meters beam, weighing 100 tons, the "Rosa" has a sail area of 2000 m2. Inside her fine woods create an environment which is refined and comfortable.
In 2005 she was bought by the charity SOS Grand Bleu who updated her to European standards in order to use her for their campaigns to protect marine wildlife. After an intensive renovation she was raised to a standard where she could carry up to 35 people.
