CONSTRUCTIONBuilt in 1959. Carvel wooden construction of teak planking below the waterline and mahogany planking above the waterline on oak frames with bronze fastenings, white painted topsides and varnished superstructure, long keel with lead ballast and galvanised centre plate. Self draining aft cockpit with wheel steering, keel hung rudder, canvas sheathed decks with painted non slip surface (decks re-canvassed 2006). 4 berths in 2 cabins with standing headroom.

SAILS & RIG:Slab reefing mainsail (Gowen, 1990). No 1 Genoa (Gowen, 2007), No 1 Genoa (Gowen, 1990), No 2 Genoa (Gowen, 1998), working Jib (Gowen, 1990), cruising chute (Gowen, 1997). Fractional Bermudan sloop rig with varnished pine mast and boom and stainless steel standing rigging (standing rigging was renewed in 2003). Terylene running rigging (2001). Lazyjacks.

ENGINE:Volvo 2003 3 cylinder 28HP diesel engine (installed new in 1993). Electric start. Raw water cooled. Alternator charging to 2 x 12 volt batteries (2006). Battery charge regulator fitted. Shaft drive to fixed 3 blade bronze propeller. Rope cutter. 25 litre fuel capacity giving approximately 60 miles range at about 6 knots cruising speed. Maximum speed under engine is around 8 knots. The engine was removed and fully overhauled in 2007.

DECK GEAR:Stainless steel pushpit, pulpit, stanchions and guardwires, sail cover, sprayhood, boarding ladder, cockpit spraydodgers with name, deck wash pump, CQR and fisherman anchors with chain, manual anchor windlass, 2 Lewmar 40 self tailing sheet winches, halyard winch, spinnaker pole, various mooring warps and fenders.

SAFETY GEAR:3 fire extinguishers, 4 life jackets, 4 safety harnesses, fire blanket, various flares (date unknown), first aid kit, horseshoe lifebuoy, foghorn, manual bilge pump and 2 electric bilge pumps.

NAVIGATION EQUIPMENT:Sestrel steering compass, echo sounder, Brookes & Gatehouse speed and log, ICOM VHF radio, 2 GPS, clock and barometer, various charts, navigation lights.

DOMESTIC EQUIPMENT:Her galley has a 2 burner gimballed gas cooker with grill and oven, stainless steel sink with 40 gallon freshwater capacity, cool box, separate heads with marine toilet and wash basin and hanging locker.

ACCOMMODATION:She has 5 berths in 2 cabins, her forepeak has stowage to starboard with a single berth opposite, full width heads with marine toilet, , saloon has 2 single settee berths (port side converts to a double) and there is a folding table. Chart table to port with quarter berth under and galley opposite.

REMARKS:“Vale of York” has been carefully and professionally maintained by her current owner, wintering her ashore at West Mersea under cover and spending her summers afloat on a swinging mooring also at West Mersea. Lifting keel is particularly useful for East Coast sailing and her design and looks are typical of Laurent Giles cruising and racing yachts of the time.
