It is unusual to find an open Memory with an inboard engine, this Salterns built boat has a Yanmar GM10 neatly fitted in the cockpit. A lifting hatch gives access to the forepeak with the standard 2 full length v-berths. Her mast is keel stepped. She has the Salterns’ mahogany fitout. History of the Memory: The Memory 19 is a gaff rigged sloop originally designed some 33 years ago by Tony Robinson RINA for himself and his family. He was inspired by the refined shapes and practicality of the small, shoal draft fishing smacks of Brightlingsea and so the Memory has the ability to dry out on a mooring, run up a beach or onto a trailer, making her ideal for today’s leisure sailor. There are over 130 Memorys which are now well proven classics in their own right; safe, easily handled yet fast boats with numerous wins to their credit in Old Gaffers’ Association events. For a few years from the mid 1970s, they were sold as kit boats and the styles and standards of the fitouts vary considerably. Building stopped around 1980 and none were produced until we at Salterns Boatbuilders, returning to the original concept of simplicity and function, started producing complete boats in 1996. Our philosophy has been to use the very best of modern and traditional materials and craftsmanship, to give an uncomplicated yet beautiful boat. The main question for the second hand buyer is “open” or “cabin”; thereafter it is a matter of personal choice and quality of build and condition. There are very few Memorys left that need total renovation. Prices usually vary from around £8,000 for a boat needing TLC to around £25,000 for a pre-owned Salterns’ built Memory.
